I dunno about where y’all are, but here in Texas the heat is ON. The sun beating down with intense fury is enough to fry even the toughest skin. But since no one likes ripe tomato skin, we aren’t pushing our luck on beating burns on our own. Therefore we’re all scrambling for our gluten free sunscreen.

But as necessary as it is, it’s unusually difficult to find gluten free sunscreen.

I’ve hunted high and low for it and finally come up with 3 options. While I suspect there are more I just haven’t found yet, this is all I’ve been able to turn up. Actually, looking for more possibilities is why this article took so long in coming. But as summer wears on, we just can’t wait anymore.

So here’s what I’ve been able to turn up!

Top 3 Gluten Free Sunscreens

Cleure’s Gluten Free Sunscreen

SPF 30 | 8oz | $39

After trying this sunscreen, I was really pleased with how good it felt. Ran around in it for an entire afternoon, kayaked for the first time (so fun!) and at the end of the afternoon, there was still sunscreen left on my skin! It was never overly chalky, nor gummy. It did have a bit of a white color when I first applied it, but it wasn’t so white it was startling. I’ve used lots of sunscreens in the past that made you look like you were freshly out of the dead of winter, but fortunately this is not one of them.

A little goes a long way with this sunscreen, thanks I think to the shea butter base.

Lemongrass Spa’s Gluten Free Sunscreen

SPF 30 | 4oz | $16

Slightly less creamy feeling than the Cleure, this sunscreen nonetheless is easy to apply and stays well, even when sweating. As much as I love Lemongrass Spa in general, I really didn’t know what to expect from their sunscreen. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it lasted.

There is a bit more of a white residue left from the Lemongrass Spa gluten free sunscreen that lasted the entire lifespan of the sunscreen. I didn’t mind though, because every time I looked down I knew I still had sunscreen on. It isn’t overly jarring, especially if you already have fairly pale skin.

Keys’ Gluten Free Sunscreen

SPF 30+ | 100 ml (3.38oz) | $26.95

This is the one sunscreen I’ve yet to try. Having heard really good things about this company, it sounds pretty amazing! It’s designed to wear on your face and under your makeup. It claims it doesn’t have any white residue and that it can help soothe skin irritations as well as prevent sunburn.

Sounds pretty good, right? I’d love to try it, but haven’t yet had the chance. If any of my readers have tried it, I’d love to hear what you thought of it! Leave a comment below and let us know!

And that does it for now!

I will keep looking for more gluten free sunscreen options, but for now, this is what we’ve got. 2 out of 3 being for sure good is a pretty awesome record, so personally I’m very pleased with what the gluten free sunscreen world has to offer us.

Best Gluten-Free Hairspray & Styling Products (2023) https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/gluten-free-hairspray-styling/ https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/gluten-free-hairspray-styling/#comments Tue, 09 Mar 2021 13:39:13 +0000 https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/?p=790 Since our last post on gluten shampoo and conditioners, some readers ask for recommendations of gluten free hairspray and styling products. The truth is, most of the hairspray and styling products contain wheat protein. And as a celiac we know that anything you put on your body or hair has the capacity to make it into your mouth…then you could have problems.

Fortunately, after reaching out to all the haircare companies we could find, we were so pleasantly surprised to find a few haircare brands that offer high quality hairspray & styling products free of gluten! Keep reading to find out!

Best Gluten-Free Hairsprays

1.LOMA Leave In Conditioner Spray

A spray that detangles and conditions? Loma did their thing when creating this product. If you have hair that tangles easily or curls that need a boost of moisture, this can do it all. It will also protect hair that’s been colored. Also great if you have sensitive scalps.

2.Loma Curvy Creme

Curvy Creme helps maintain and define your curls. The medium-hold perfectly defines waves or curls you have naturally and leaves them frizz-free. This gel also doesn’t leave hair feeling brittle or crunchy. It will help cut styling time down in half and is long-lasting. The scent of pear and cranberry leaves you feeling sweet!

3.Alaffia Purely Coconut Texturizing Spray

I’m extremely happy to always have beach hair without ever leaving home thanks to this product. The combination of coconut water and sea salt smell incredible. Amazing for all hair types, especially those who have fine hair. It provides hold, volume, and body. It’s also great to have a clean formula and know I’m not damaging my hair with chemicals.

4.Honeybee Gardens Hair Spray

The most game-changing feature about this hairspray is that it comes in a spray bottle and not an aerosol can. Since it’s alcohol-free you will notice your hair won’t feel brittle and dry like most hairsprays. You get a stronghold with nourishing ingredients like Chamomile and Sunflower Seed Extract.

I hope this was helpful to some of you! If you have any favorite gluten free hair styling products, please share them in the comments as well!

Best Gluten Free Foundations

#1. Best Gluten-free Liquid Foundation

Mineral Fusion Liquid Foundation

Mineral Fusion did a phenomenal job formulating this product. I love that it has powerful antioxidants. It’s refreshing to see makeup products being formulated with skincare ingredients like Vitamin C and Peptides. Unlike a lot of foundations on the market with clean formulas, this product gives you a matte finish if you are not into dewy skin.

#2. Ecco Bella Plant-Based Vegan Foundation

The eco-friendly formula of this product gives your skin some amazing benefits. The titanium dioxide works well to block the sun’s rays, and the aloe vera works to lock in moisture. It offers great coverage while keeping your skin luminous. Ecco Bella always continues to surprise me with natural, high-quality products.

#3. Bite Beauty Changemaker Supercharged Micellar Foundation

One of the things to love about Bite Beauty is the ingredients they use in their products. It’s comforting knowing the Maqui Berry is nourishing for the skin. This foundation does it all. You can build up the coverage, or keep it lightweight. A little goes a long way with this product.

#4. Gabriel Cosmetics Moisturizing Liquid Foundation

A classic foundation to keep in your makeup bag. Gabriel Cosmetics always provides timeless beauty with its products. This moisturizing liquid foundation sits nicely on the skin and provides a natural satin finish. Perfect if you have dry, combination skin because it’s formulated with Vitamin A and E. It’s worth the investment!

#5. Zuzu Luxe Oil Free Liquid Foundation

Now that the market is flooded with dewy, glowy foundations, I’m happy to see this one for oily skin. Sometimes you don’t want to have a completely matte look. Which is why this Zuzu Luxe foundation offers a natural finish but is still Oil-Free. A full-coverage formula that enhances your skin.

#6. ILLUMINARÉ Moisturizing Mineral Foundation with SPF 20

This foundation provides multiple benefits. It offers beautiful coverage and a dewy glow. If you are oily, pairing it with a matte primer and setting powder can help the staying power. It also has SPF 20 which is great to layer on top of your first layer of sunscreen. Cruelty-Free, Vegan, and Paraben-Free.

Best Gluten-free powder foundation

#1. Mineral Fusion Pressed Powder Foundation

A powder that does it all! The fine texture allows for a smooth and matte finish that doesn’t crease. It’s also great to build up coverage. Not only can it be used to set your makeup but it makes for a perfect matte bronzer. Another amazing factor is the soothing ingredients this powder contains, like Sea Kelp and Licorice Root.

#2. Alima Pure Satin Matte Foundation – Foundation Powder

This loose powder works wonders for no-makeup makeup days. It will add just enough coverage whenever you need it. Having a loose powder is handy to dust over your foundation or sunscreen. I’m also happy Alima formulated this product with Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. It makes reapplying sunscreen a breeze!

#3. Gabriel Cosmetics Powder Foundation

Finally a clean powder formula for oily skin. It’s difficult to find a powder that controls oil, mattifies and doesn’t fall flat. Gabriel’s packaging is also practical to keep in your bag for touch-ups. It works well to lightly set under the eyes, but also makes sure the rest of your makeup is intact all day long!

#4. Ecco Bella Vegan Pressed Finishing Powder

One thing about Ecco Bella is knowing you are getting a vegan product formulated with clean ingredients. This pressed powder is no exception. It is a staple product we need. This foundation also gives a great satin finish to your makeup. The built-in mirror makes the application process fast and simple.

#5. Emani Flawless Matte Foundation

Emani really surprised me with this matte foundation. Not only does it work to heal the skin of acne, but its soft light HD technology blurs the skin. It’s the ideal product if you are a professional makeup artist, or even if you appear on camera often. It’s also packed with beneficial ingredients like Squalene and Vitamin C.

#6. Zuzu Luxe – Dual Powder Foundation

Zuzu Luxe always provides classic beauty products that you will need in your makeup bag. This product will leave your skin with a soft matte finish. It’s fragrance-free and gluten-free, perfect for soothing sensitive skin. The best part is that the packaging is refillable. Now you don’t have to buy a compact every time you run out of powder.

#7. Honeybee Gardens Pressed Mineral Powder Foundation

This powder is perfect to simplify your routine. I love the clean formula, as well as the refillable and recyclable packaging. Minimizes waste, and provides a decent coverage to your skin. It also works well for mature skin since this product does not settle in fine lines. At an affordable price point, this powder will be your new best friend.

Do I Need Gluten Free Shampoo?

Most experts ( Mayo Clinic,  celiac.org, etc) say that gluten can not be absorbed through the your scalp or skin. However, even if it doesn’t work that way, there is always an issue with products such as shampoo (or lipsticks, conditioners, body wash, etc) as they are easily ingested.

Just think of how many times when you shower you have gotten shampoo in your mouth. Plus, there will be some residue in your hair. So when you touch your hair and then eat food or touch your lips without washing your hands first, you will get glutened.

Best to play it safe and just go with gluten free. You will have no idea what is glutening you if you continue to use gluten containing products, in any way. Plus, there are wonderful products out there that do not contain gluten, why take the chance??

I hope this list has made it easier for you to find great gluten-free shampoo and hair care products. I’ll be updating this list as I reach out to more companies, so keep an eye out for that as well.

FAQs:

Do you need gluten free lipstick?

If you suffer from celiac disease, or are gluten sensitive/intolerant, then gluten free lipstick is a must because you ingest a lot of it – think of how often you lick or bite your lip. And it only takes a small amount of gluten to trigger an reaction.

As a celiac myself, I had constant problems with my lips breaking out, before I figured out it was the lipsticks that were causing it. After going gluten free, no more issues with my lips!

So if you use gluten-containing lip products but find you continue to have symptoms, consider switching to gluten-free – you’ll find it helps.

Thank you for reading the gluten-free lipstick guide, and I hope you found some great gluten-free brands and products. If you have any favorite gluten-free lipsticks, please share them in the comments as well!

Best Gluten-Free & Non-Toxic Nail Polish Brands (Updated 2023) https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/best-gluten-free-nail-polish-brands/ https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/best-gluten-free-nail-polish-brands/#comments Mon, 14 Dec 2020 11:10:31 +0000 https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/?p=655 Some GFMK readers recently ask for help finding gluten-free nail polish and remover. For many people who are gluten sensitive, nail polish is usually one of the least concerns. However, if you have the habit of biting your nails or eating with your hands, theres still chance of getting sick.

As a celiac who is extremely sensitive, I like to make sure all my makeup is gluten free. Better to be safe than sorry especially when it comes to gluten on my hands!

So, what nail polish brands are gluten free? I’ve reached out to nearly all the nail polish brands out there and put together a list of gluten free nail polish brands. I’ve also listed my favourite nail polish and remover products. So keep reading to find out!

It has been pretty chip proof and holds up well for weeks at a time. Also their formula is free of harsh chemecals and 100% vegan. I always stock up when they have a good sale going on.

Where to buy: Ulta, Amazon

Is there gluten in nail polish?

Yes. A few years back, I got some nail polish top/base coat from Target, only to look more closely to find hydrolyzed wheat protein listed on the ingredients. I checked my existing nail products and found another bottle that had it as well.

Suprisingly, gluten derived ingredients are widely used in nail polish products for the purpose of moisturizing and conditioning. This is their specialty, therefore they are used in almost every nail product imaginable. A lot of nail polish removers contain wheat protein as well. Which is why you should always check the ingredients, and when in doubt double check with the company.

I hope this list has made it easier for you to find great gluten free nail polish brands. Feel free to list some of your favorites in the comments!

Best Gluten Free Concealers (Updated for 2023) https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/best-gluten-free-concealers/ https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/best-gluten-free-concealers/#comments Tue, 01 Dec 2020 14:11:55 +0000 https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/?p=664 For many of us, concealer is the one makeup product we couldn’t go without. Whether it’s to cover up dark circles, breakouts, or discoloration, it’s a must have in our makeup routain!  But as necessary as it is, it’s unusually difficult to find gluten free concealers.

The good news is we do have options. In this post, I’ve gathered all the best gluten free concealers I can find. Check ’em out!

1. Alima Pure Cream Concealer – Full Coverage Concealer

Alima Pure is one of my go-to GF makeup brands, and this cream concealer from them is my personal favourtie! It’s formulated with natural ingredients such as beeswax, avocado oil, shea butter. It applies smooth with full coverage, doesn’t look thick or cakey and lasts all day. Plus, it comes in ten shades that adapt to just about every skin tone.

2. Emani HD Corrective Concealer

This Emani ultra-creamy concealer has everything I wanted in a concealer. It’s light, clean, and provides good coverage without causing an irritation. It works great for dark circles, as well as spots and fine lines concealing. The extra bonus is the brightening affect, making my sleep-deprived self look well rested.

3. Juice Beauty Perfecting Concealer

This concealer is designed primarily for use in the under eye area, but it covers up spots and blemishes as well. It’s vegan, lightweight, blends well and stays on, great for sensitive skin. Keep in mind that it needs to be warmed up on your fingers before applying because of the nature of all natural products.

Where to buy: Ulta

4. Mineral Fusion Compact Concealer Duo

For those of us who have difficulty finding the right shade, Mineral Fusion’s 2-tone duo concealer makes it easy by using the correct shade or blending.  With its creamy texture, it goes on easily with full coverage and lasts all day. Plus, it is vegan, cruelty and paraben free.

Where to buy: Amazon

5. rms beauty “Un” Cover-up Concealer

This gluten free concealer from rms beauty is another one of my favorites. It’s formulated with clean, natural ingredients like Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil. It provides medium coverage. It’s creamy, luminous and easy to apply, ideal for using under the eyes.

This is another great gluten free mineral concealer from Mineral Fusion. It’s creamy yet lightweight, provides medium coverage and blends in well. The major downside is its limited shade selection.

The Ultimate Gluten-Free Makeup List (UPDATED 2023) https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/gluten-free-makeup-list/ https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/gluten-free-makeup-list/#comments Fri, 16 Oct 2020 09:28:50 +0000 https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/?p=323

Welcome the GFMG Gluten Free Makeup List! The biggest collection of gluten free makeup, skincare, hair care and body care on the internet!

Navigating the conflicting world of gluten free makeup can be a real challenge. With no regulations setting the standard for gluten free makeup, no two companies mean the same thing when they claim their products are “gluten free”. Do they really mean “gluten free”? Or do they mean “oh, it’s only a tiny bit of gluten that can’t hurt you”. If you have reactions to topical gluten, or are a Celiac looking to minimize your exposure to gluten, this can be a very dangerous issue. Who can you trust to tell the truth?

Fortunately, after tons of calling, emailing, social media bugging and research, I’ve built quite a collection of safely gluten free makeup, skin care, hair care and body care products. I set high standards and grill companies mercilessly to ensure that their products are as safe as possible.

As always, this list will be constantly updated with new/departing brands.

Looking for gluten-free brands of a specific beauty product? Make sure you check our guides on:

List of Gluten-Free Brands

I’ve divided the list into 2 categories.

  • Strictly Gluten-Free: These are brands for extremely sensitive folk, where the products and the facility are all gluten-free.
  • Formulated without Gluten: These are for the less sensitive folk where no gluten ingredients are used, but there may be contamination in the facility. (Read below on why I’m including companies that fall into this category)

Pick whichever category fits you best and roll from there.

Strictly Gluten-Free (for the Extremely Sensitive)

Makeup

  • Afterglow Cosmetics has apparently gone out of business. If you have any left, don’t worry, it’s still fine. If you run across leftovers in a store, GRAB THEM ALL. But they are no longer selling or making them, so they have been removed from the list.

  • Au Naturale Cosmetics (available on Amazon) – 100% natural, cruelty-free, vegan

Why On Earth Is There Gluten In Makeup?

Gluten could be here…

Unlike most gluten foods like bread, most makeup products are not based on wheat, barley or rye products. They are typically added as a supplement to base ingredients. Why?

Texture.

Just like in food, gluten-based additives are used as binders, for additional moisture and to beef up the nutrition. Wheat ingredients are cheap and easy to come by. Some of them (like wheat germ oil) have actually been found to be good for skin.
Well. Good for most people.

Do I Need Gluten Free Makeup?

That depends on your level of sensitivity. Both Celiac and Gluten Intolerant people can have reactions to topical gluten. In 2014 I ran the largest survey to date of people who actively seek out gluten free cosmetics. The results?

  • 53% avoided topical gluten because they had reactions to it.
  • 28% avoided it out of cross-contamination concerns.
  • 10% chose “Other”, and left comments to explain their reasons.
  • 9% avoided it because their doctors told them to.

For those with reactions to gluten on their skin, their symptoms were diverse. However the most common included:

  • Rashes
  • Burning, Watery  and/or Swollen eyes
  • Hair loss
  • Vertigo
  • Internal “Like I’ve been Glutened” symptoms
  • Headaches
  • Hives

If you suffer from any of the above symptoms and haven’t been able to trace it to food, then it’s possible you are sensitive to topical gluten. In that case, making sure all your makeup is gluten free is crucial.

However, even if you don’t suffer from any of the above symptoms, if you are internally sensitive it may be wise to avoid gluten in any makeup or skin care that may be injested.

Lipstick? Lip gloss? Lip balm? All of them. Make sure it’s gluten free.

Why are companies that may be processed with gluten are included in the list?

Well, 2 years ago when I took a survey of you, my readers, about 60% of you told me you didn’t mind your makeup having potential cross-contamination.

And now, after a whirlwind of illness and then sudden crazy healing, I’m personally less topically sensitive to gluten too.

DON’T WORRY: The companies are carefully separated.

I hope this list has made it easier for you to find gluten-free makeup. I’ll be updating this list as I hear back from companies, so keep an eye out for that as well. Feel free to list some of your favorites in the comments!

Looking for different gluten-free makeup guides? I also have them for Sephora and Ulta.

The Best Gluten-free Makeup in Stores https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/best-gluten-free-makeup-stores/ https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/best-gluten-free-makeup-stores/#comments Sun, 13 Sep 2020 09:08:44 +0000 https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/?p=31

(Update 2020: If you are looking for gulten free makeup at Ulta, check my post here.)

Once upon a time, finding gluten-free makeup in stores was impossible.

But the world has changed. New options abound. And now we’ve evolved to talk about two different levels of topical gluten sensitivity: Sensitive and Extremely Sensitive.

Brands and products for both of these categories are now available in stores. You might have to look a little harder for some of them. But they exist and you can find them. So let’s go!

Gluten-free makeup for extremely sensitive lovelies

Starting here, because everyone can use these companies. No matter how sensitive. No gluten ingredients, no cross-contamination. Clean, clean, clean.

BITE Beauty

What it is: Company specializing in natural, luscious lip products.

Available at: Sephora

ILIA

What it is: Organic and natural cosmetic company with a ton of cream-based products

Available at: Sephora

Ecco Bella

What it is: Full line of all-natural, vegan makeup. Been around forever, still a good, inexpensive choice.

Available at: Whole Foods, Central Market, lots of local health food stores (check here)

Gluten-free makeup for the less-sensitive lovelies

For the lovelies OK with potential cross-contamination in products on their skin. Each of these companies are free of gluten-ingredients, but may have come into contact with gluten ingredients during processing.

Also, remember: Most gluten ingredients in makeup are ones with trace amounts of gluten. So these products might be cross-contaminated with ingredients with trace amounts of gluten. How willing you are to risk this is up to you. 😉

Physicians Formula

What it is: Outrageously cheap, but still pretty darn good makeup. EVERYTHING of theirs is now gluten-free. Cross-contamination is possible, but unlikely.

Available at: Ulta,  Walmart, Target, iHerb

Tarte

What it is: A beauty brand that straddles the line between natural beauty and high-tech products. The cult-following is deserved.

Available at: Ulta, Sephora

W3LL PEOPLE

What it is: An all-natural beauty brand focusing on making the world a better place through sustainable beauty. Do avoid the Bio-Extreme Lip Gloss though. It’s their one product with gluten ingredients in it.

Available at:UltaTarget

Too Faced

What it is: Girly, fun, huge brand with a cult following.

Available at: UltaSephora

NUDESTIX

What it is: A brand whose entire schtick (get it?!) is to have makeup in stick form for everything. Creamy makeup that helps you do nude perfection on a regular basis. About as low-maintenance as you can get.

Available at: Ulta, Sephora, Macy’s

Which makeup brands will you be dashing out to try? 😉

The 5 absolute best gluten free spf 15+ facial moisturizers https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/gluten-free-spf-15-facial-moisturizers/ https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/gluten-free-spf-15-facial-moisturizers/#comments Sat, 12 Sep 2020 12:37:20 +0000 https://glutenfreemakeupgal.com/?p=21

Summer is HERE and it’s absolutely brutal. Here in Texas, we’re frying alive in the blistering rays of the sun. Tonight it’s in the upper 90’s until the sun goes down. No joke.

With all this insane heat, it’s time to really pack on the SPF. It’s not terribly difficult to find gluten free sunscreen, but finding gluten free facial moisturizers with built-in SPF? Nearly impossible.

So I’ve gathered all the best gluten free SPF 15+ facial moisturizers I can find. Check ’em out!
