You Asked, You Shall Receive: Gluten Free Lotion! – (Seed) Body Care

The soap in the bathroom gleefully committed the murder of my skin and left it feeling as dry as parchment.  Discreetly, as I listened to my companion’s blabber, I reached into my purse, pulled out my old, over-scented, cheesy lotion and applied it over my wounded hands.  For a brief moment, as the stuff did it’s work, I felt some relief.  But only for a moment.  The next, a tingling, burning, itching sensation began to crawl over my afflicted appendages.

“Awwww, drat.”

Finding gluten free lotion is tough!  Oat extract, wheat germ oil, doubtful vitamin E sourcing and all kinds of other obstacles make lotion an easy way to get gluten on your body.  Lotion is easily one of the most dangerous and difficult to find gluten free products.  I have been searching and searching and searching for something that I can use with no fear of being glutened; no fear of  having to run to the bathroom to desperately wash off the vicious cream; no fear of distractedly nibbling on my knuckle as I concentrate on a particularly difficult code issue.

Enter (seed) body care!

I nearly squealed aloud when they replied back to me about being tested gluten free!  But I bit back the sound so as not to disturb everyone within half a mile.  Doing the Happy Dance is quiet, however, so I fell back on that method of expressing my excitement.

To try out, (seed) sent me their:

  • Body Lotion
  • Hand Cream

The products did not disappoint.

Body lotion

Rich and creamy, thick and smooth, luxurious and totally non-oily.  It soaked into my skin much faster than I had anticipated, and left no residue; just silky smooth and deliciously softened skin.  Plus it’s so concentrated, I only have to use a very little bit to get big results.

The scent (lavender sage) gave the promised “burst” of aromatherapy, but faded quickly.  There is a citrus and an unscented version if you prefer to not be treated to the soothing fragrance of lavender (*gasp!*), but since lavender and I have a ‘thang, I’ll be sticking with that perhaps forever.

Hand cream

My hands have always been decently tough.  Working outside, exposing them to the elements and just inheriting my Dad’s hands have given them a level of imperviousness that makes caring for them super easy.  But on the flip side, when my hands need help, they need serious help.  No ordinary stuff can solve my hand problems.

(seed)’s Hand Cream?  It combines the power of a pure oil soak with the ease of a lotion, while also leaving a fine layer of protection on the surface of my skin.  Now, I have not had cracked or chapped hands since I’ve had (seed)’s hand cream, so haven’t tested it in those extreme conditions.  But, seeing how it works compared to my previous favorites, I’ll be glad to have this by my side when those extreme times do come.   😉

(seed) Body Care stands out from crowd not only because of their tested gluten-freeness, but because of the deep moisturizing of their products.  Even if I were not loving them for being gluten tested alone, I would love how gentle, soothing and hydrating the products are.  It very easily compares and possibly even surpasses the very best non-gluten free lotions I have ever used.  (seed) Body Care has a permanent place in my bathroom cabinet. 😀

Gluten Free Bronzer for a Sunkissed You – Everyday Minerals

So I’ve had some questions coming in about gluten free bronzer and for a while, wasn’t exactly sure where to point y’all. But then right after I started casting my eye around for it, one of my all-time favorite companies comes out their own line of bronzers. WOOT!!

Featuring 5 versatile colors and a variety of finishes, Everyday Minerals has created a collection with something for everyone.

Bronzer is a versatile product that can really be used for anything, from eyeshadow to contouring and of course it’s original Greek goddess creating purpose. I’m a huge fan of the product in general, but I’m adoring Everyday Minerals’ versions.

I got to try two of the gluten free bronzers, from both ends of the bronzer type scale:

  • Beach Bronzer
  • Amazing Bronzer

And also, Everyday Minerals’ Tapered Sculpting Face brush.

Beach Bronzer

This shade is a matte, warm, well pigmented bronzer. The golden undertones are particularly stunning and they make my warm-toned face positively glow. Not even kidding. Unfortunately I don’t have any cool toned people to test this out on, but judging by how the warmth of the shade is not yellow in any way, I think it will look amazing on anyone.

Personally, for bronzer I prefer a slight shimmer, simply because it really pushes the idea of a healthy luminosity and helps to keep the darker shade from pushing your highlights back and visually flattening your face out. But that is pure personal preference. Therefore for me, my absolute favorite thing to do with this bronzer is use it for sculpting. The stark matte quality really allows you to carve out the hollows of your cheeks, press back the outside of your face and anything else I want to do contouring-wise.

But however you like to use it, the blendable quality and the easy to use buildable tone makes this bronzer a super easy addition to any gal’s makeup box. I’m a weeeee bit obsessed with mine… Oops!

Amazing Bronzer

With soft shimmer, gentle warmth and a not overpowering shade, this bronzer is a simple and relaxed first step into bronzer or daily staple. This is absolutely something to dust on the top of your cheekbones, dash across your forehead and sprinkle down your nose. Even if you’re not looking to go “beach beauty”, there’s a certain lift that this bronzer gives when used. It’s not fussy, you don’t have to be paranoid that you’ll get too much on unless you are extremely pale. Even in that case, I think, you could use this mild shade and not look as though you were trying too hard.

If I’m in a hurry and still want to look naturally healthy, this has become my “go-to”. It’s hard to mess up and gorgeous in a way that is hard to place “why” once you look at the finished product. The versatile and quiet shading of the product makes it another effortless yes.

Tapered Sculpting Face Brush

As the title proudly says, this is the perfect sized brush for sculpting. Not too big that it gets sloppy, not too small that it doesn’t fit in the hollows of your cheeks, and just stiff enough to give good control, this brush hits every mark for “go-to bronzer brush”.

All in all, I gotta be honest… I have no idea which one of these is my fav.
I grab one or the other almost every day now. They’re just so beautiful, easy to use and forever IN. With a $14.99 price-point, either of these products are a quality yet inexpensive way to give your makeup kit a boost.

Organic, Silky, Gluten Free Shampoo & Conditioner – Ecco Bella

I get a lot of questions about gluten free shampoo.  And it’s no wonder!  It’s hard to find and many many Celiacs have reactions from gluten on their scalp.  I’ve heard everything from loosing hair by the handfuls, to open sores, to headaches.

While there are several gluten free hair care companies online, finding gluten free shampoo in stores can be nearly impossible.

However, there is one company that can be found almost anywhere with a health food section:

Ecco Bella

I’ve known about Ecco Bella for a very long time, having practically grown up in Whole Foods.  But it was only recently that I realized they are 100% gluten free (though untested)!  They have a full line of all natural, vegan, cosmetic, skincare and body care products, including shampoo!

But the thing with “all natural” shampoo is that as often as not, it just doesn’t seem to clean well.  I don’t like to step out of the shower and still feel like my hair is dirty even though I washed it 6 times, thank you very much.  My hair is very oily, the kind of oily that I can’t go without washing it for more than a day, otherwise it just looks awful.  So I’m pretty picky about my shampoo!

Ecco Bella’s Vanilla Shampoo

First off, this stuff smells amazing! Sorta like one of those really yummy vanilla candles. Not the cheesy ones, the yummy ones. And the scent does last for a while! I’ve found myself wishing for vanilla cupcakes on more than one occasion after using this shampoo…

But most importantly… This shampoo does clean very well! I usually end up washing it once more than usual with chemical shampoos, but my hair comes out feeling good and clean and lookin’ shiny!

There’s almost no lather to the shampoo, but that’s absolutely normal for all natural shampoo. It does not impair the cleaning at all, nor does it interfere with the shampoo-y texture. :tounge:

Ecco bella’s vanilla conditioner

Now, as a disclaimer about the Conditioner… Since I do have oily hair, I almost never use this type of product. If I use it on my scalp, my hair is dirty within 12 hours. But sometimes, when my ends feel dry and lackluster, I like to use a little on my ends only. Lately, I’ve been having that problem, so the conditioner arrived just in time. 😎

This stuff is like silk! I love the way my ends feel after I use it. I can’t say I’m much of an expert on conditioners, but here’s what I can say: Even when my ends feel dry, I usually dislike using conditioner. Not so with Ecco Bella’s. My fine hair is naturally silky, but this conditioner takes it to the next level. Now, because of that, it can make styling extra tough for my already difficult to style hair. However, since half the time I just don’t fight it and throw it into a ponytail anyway, that doesn’t bother me too much.

I really like Ecco Bella’s shampoo and conditioner! It’s nothing particularly unique, just your regular joe shampoo and conditioner. But in the gluten free world, where just plain ‘ol dependable items can be a pain to find, Ecco Bella makes it easy to grab a safe bottle of shampoo right off your grocery store shelves.

Thank you ecco bella!!!

Check ’em out! Most health food stores, or grocery stores with health food sections carry Ecco Bella, but they don’t always have all the products. So talk to your local store and if all else fails, you’ve still got the website. 😉

I Have a New Favorite Gluten Free Skin Care – Sophyto

Yes folks, you read that right.  No, I have not gone through my cabinet and tossed out my old skincare, because it’s still all good stuff.  But this…  This stuff is awesome.

Sophyto: organic science, natural beauty, certified gluten free

Sophyto is a truly exciting company.  Their formulas consist of botanical and powerful bioactive ingredients that naturally nourish and restore skin’s youthful glow.  They advertise themselves as “Anti-Aging”, which with the kind of ingredients they use I’ve no doubt is true!  But right now, it’s not the anti aging that’s got me so hyped up.  It’s the fact that it’s 100% CERTIFIED gluten free skincare.  It’s the way my skin looks and feels after using it.  It’s the way my entire body reacts to the utter purity bathing my face.

I am so in love.

After using these products, my face literally glowed, my skin felt so fresh it was almost tingling- I haven’t felt like my face got that clean in a VERY long time.  It was, in short, a luxurious experience using this system.  My entire body relaxed and felt soothed as the natural scents wafted up faintly and the impurities of the day washed away.  I am totally blown away, and so are all the gals I’ve shared the products with thus far!

So here’s what I got to try!

  • Purifying Silken Cleanser
  • Dual Action Exfoliating Treatment
  • PH Optimizing Restorative Toner
  • Anti-Aging Antioxidant Serum
  • Tocotrienol Super Skin Concentrate

This is the WHOLE basic set, plus the Super Skin Concentrate.

Purifying silken cleanser

Mmmmm…  Silky is right!  Silky, soothing, left my face feeling crisp and fresh.  Not a hint of drying, but a beautiful depth of “clean” feeling for just one product.  It also just won the Best Innovation in Cosmetics at this year’s Natural and Organic Awards, held in London in association with UK Soil Association.  Impressive!  😀

Dual action exfoliating treatment

Interestingly, this exfoliating treatment does not have any sort of scrubbing beads in it.  They decided against going that route, instead using fruit acids to dissolve the dead skin.  I’ve never heard of that being used as an exfoliant, so was curious to see how it worked.  It has an earthy, tea-ish, herb-y scent that brings back memories of those little tucked away in a corner health food stores, before “health food” was cool.  When I first put it on, there was an odd tingling sensation, not unpleasant at all, just odd.  It’s very liquid-y, so requires you to move a bit quickly to make sure it gets all on your face and doesn’t try to run down your arm.   But it works.  I could see and feel the difference when I rinsed it off.  My face was glowing, the tones were evened out, my skin just felt sparkling.  And no, sparkly feeling skin does not make you feel like a vampire.  Sorry.  😛

PH optimizing restorative toner

Ahhhh, I love toners.  There’s nothing quite like a spritz of it to brighten, freshen and soothe skin.  And this is an excellent toner.  In fact, I’m in danger of running out of it too fast because I want to use it so often.  Feeling drab in the middle of the day?  Spritz!  Looking a little oily?  Spritz!  Looking a bit dry?  Spritz!  Ahhhhh…  Now where’s that little bottle?

Anti-aging antioxidant serum

The description says “Our award winning, dimethicone and oil-free antioxidant serum is specially designed to naturally supplement skin’s own protective barrier and fight signs of premature aging“.  Now, I’m still young enough that “aging” isn’t really anything I can see on my face right now…  But, I can say that this stuff feels yummy on the skin!  It’s a nice, light moisturizer that smells faintly of apple cider vinegar and green tea.  I wish I could tell ‘ya how it works against aging, but the reviews on the website burst with praise over the firming and glowifying properties of the serum.

Tocotrienol super skin concentrate

When this says super, it means SUPER.  This is one of the heaviest, most powerful moisturizers I have ever used.  Ever.  Now, I have normal to oily skin, and in humid Texas summer heat, this is honestly one of the last things I would ever need.  However.  Even oily skin needs a helping hand in dry winter.  Why couldn’t I have found this during the record winter chills of Nebraska?  It would have saved my poor face from chapping and restored it to health overnight.  Don’t underestimate this concentrate:  With as much power as is contained within this bottle, your arch enemy, Evil Dryness, will be vanquished before you can say shazam!

All in all, I am most pleased with Sophyto!  Certified gluten free skincare!  Pure ooooh and ahhhhh.  A luxurious experience that my skin adores.  Gluten Free Ladies and Gentlemen, this could be that  high end gluten free skincare company you’re looking for!  It was for me, and I wasn’t even looking for it.  Ha!

Check ’em out!  And if you still aren’t convinced, you can always try the travel sizes.

Top 3 Gluten Free Sunscreens to Try Without Fear

I dunno about where y’all are, but here in Texas the heat is ON. The sun beating down with intense fury is enough to fry even the toughest skin. But since no one likes ripe tomato skin, we aren’t pushing our luck on beating burns on our own. Therefore we’re all scrambling for our gluten free sunscreen.

But as necessary as it is, it’s unusually difficult to find gluten free sunscreen.

I’ve hunted high and low for it and finally come up with 3 options. While I suspect there are more I just haven’t found yet, this is all I’ve been able to turn up. Actually, looking for more possibilities is why this article took so long in coming. But as summer wears on, we just can’t wait anymore.

So here’s what I’ve been able to turn up!

Cleure’s Gluten Free Sunscreen

SPF 30 | 8oz | $39

After trying this sunscreen, I was really pleased with how good it felt. Ran around in it for an entire afternoon, kayaked for the first time (so fun!) and at the end of the afternoon, there was still sunscreen left on my skin! It was never overly chalky, nor gummy. It did have a bit of a white color when I first applied it, but it wasn’t so white it was startling. I’ve used lots of sunscreens in the past that made you look like you were freshly out of the dead of winter, but fortunately this is not one of them.

A little goes a long way with this sunscreen, thanks I think to the shea butter base.

Lemongrass Spa’s Gluten Free Sunscreen

SPF 30 | 4oz | $16

Slightly less creamy feeling than the Cleure, this sunscreen nonetheless is easy to apply and stays well, even when sweating. As much as I love Lemongrass Spa in general, I really didn’t know what to expect from their sunscreen. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it lasted.

There is a bit more of a white residue left from the Lemongrass Spa gluten free sunscreen that lasted the entire lifespan of the sunscreen. I didn’t mind though, because every time I looked down I knew I still had sunscreen on. It isn’t overly jarring, especially if you already have fairly pale skin.

Keys’ Gluten Free Sunscreen

SPF 30+ | 100 ml (3.38oz) | $26.95

This is the one sunscreen I’ve yet to try. Having heard really good things about this company, it sounds pretty amazing! It’s designed to wear on your face and under your makeup. It claims it doesn’t have any white residue and that it can help soothe skin irritations as well as prevent sunburn.

Sounds pretty good, right? I’d love to try it, but haven’t yet had the chance. If any of my readers have tried it, I’d love to hear what you thought of it! Leave a comment below and let us know!

And that does it for now!

I will keep looking for more gluten free sunscreen options, but for now, this is what we’ve got. 2 out of 3 being for sure good is a pretty awesome record, so personally I’m very pleased with what the gluten free sunscreen world has to offer us.

Coconut-Based Skincare for Sensitive Skin – Kopari

I don’t like using coconut oil on my face.

OOPS. You’re not supposed to say that in the natural skincare world. I think you’re supposed to adore coconut oil or get the heck outta dodge. BUT. My skin doesn’t like pure coconut oil on my face. It’s too heavy. It feels like an oil slick on my face. It even seems to make acne worse.

This is just my experience with coconut oil. Some people use it and find it’s the stuff of their dreams. Everyone’s skin is different. And coconut oil is still one of my favorite oils. I just use it in basically all my cooking and rarely on my face 😉

But what do you do when you love the power of coconut oil, but want something that isn’t just “straight coconut oil” to slather on your face? Or if you just want something gentle and natural that will love your skin as much as you do?

Problem solved:

Kopari is a company I’ve only recently become familiar with. Their coconut-based formulas caught my eye first,  but I hesitated on trying them because I’m not very interested in buying skincare that is just coconut oil with essential oils in them, marketed to be a magical formula. But I WAS WRONG and that’s not at all what Kopari does.

Kopari makes skincare based on coconut oil. It’s not coconut oil dressed to look like something. It harnesses the power of coconut without just being coconut. As a result, it’s powerful, natural, and works for more skin types than plain coconut oil does. And it works awesomely.

My skin had been angry with me for weeks. No joke. I ate things I shouldn’t have eaten, and my skin threw a fit. It’s been so frustrating trying to get it to heal. But it wasn’t until I started using Kopari that I finally saw significant improvement in my poor skin. Wasn’t expecting to receive assistence from the outside, since usually these are problems my body has to sort out on it’s own, no help from products. But there was a definite correlation between using Kopari and my skin finally beginning to stop looking like a war zone.

I grabbed the Beauty Bag to get an idea of what their basic skincare is like. It comes in a cute, huge, neoprene case with 4 products. Amusingly, my case is not the same as the one in the photo for this set, but it is the same one as the other bag set they offer. Have you ever noticed how the bags “sets” come in are usually worthless? Not so with this one. I’ll actually use this bag, because it’s the perfect size and feels nice and sturdy.

Inside the bag comes these 4 products-

Sparkly Eyeshadow Lasts All Day Without Creasing & Does Not Need a Base!

Right now, here in Austin, TX, it’s an absolute blaze of muggy heat. If you’re walking out your door, expect to sweat and glisten like you basically just took a shower. Expect to wipe droplets from your brow and feel a river run down your back. Expect your face to literally reflect the sun’s rays back at everyone around you because the oil is real.

Now I’m not trying to complain. But those of you who live in hot climates know exactly what this does to your makeup. The amount of summer makeup kung-fu we have to master is actually brutal. Whatever we use can’t melt, can’t smudge, can’t fade with profuse perspiration and basically has to be fit to face the fires of hell.

To be honest, in the past what I’ve done to handle these situations for long periods of time is just skip half my makeup. A little mineral powder foundation is great for your skin, but what eyeshadow and base could possibly survive such an encounter? And I’ve tried a lot of products, so when I can’t answer that question, y’all know we’re all screwed.

Except now I can. Because I just spent 3.5 hours in 95+ heat with about 70% humidity, and got back home with still flawlessly sparkly and non-creased eyeshadow.

This is not a drill. This stuff is real. And it’s literally my new obsession.

Does it really last all day?

Yes. Yes it does. It’s lasted through every extreme I’ve given it thus far. Which extremes are about the worst possible! That melting heat, oppressive mugginess and excessive sweating. If you had told me a few months ago that there was a gluten free eyeshadow that lasted literally all day without creasing at all in the worst possible weather, I would have smiled and quietly thought to myself that you were lying. But nope. This is legit.

What’s the texture like?

So what is this magic that makes this stuff so amazing? When you look at the pictures, it just kinda looks like a powder. It does in person too. Maybe a kind of sticky powder? But no. When you touch it, it’s fluffy and cool, almost like a mousse. And it goes on like a light cream, that dries almost instantly into a powdery feel. There’s absolutely no wait time between application and then putting something else on top or around it.

How are the colors?

Currently, this eyeshadow comes in 3 colors. And that’s my only complaint right now. Because I need this in all the colors, ok? But don’t get me wrong, these colors are pretty amazing. A brilliant gold, bright cool pink, and a rich warm pink. Unfortunately I can’t really use pink around my eye area, because it makes me look like I’ve been sobbing. But the gold. I’ve been wearing the gold every single time I go out because WHY NOT. It’s glorious! The pinks actually make for a fun blush too, if you like a wildly sparkly blush.

Should you get a color or two?

YOU TOTALLY SHOULD. In fact you should go get it right now.

Have you tried this product yet? Will you be trying it? Let me know in the comments below!

Vibrant, All-Natural Gluten Free Nail Polish – Keeki Pure & Simple

I’m a sucker for bright colors. Happy, vibrant, glowing, exuberant- these kinds of colors speak to my very soul. But have you noticed that many gluten free and all natural companies tend to stick with more conservative shades? Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but sometimes a gal wants a little brilliant something to break the monotony… Like maybe gluten free nail polish. 😉

Keeki Pure & Simple is a company as vibrant as their colors, started by a Mom on a Mission: To make safe, fun, beautiful, all natural products that she could feel good giving to her daughter.

Their products are entirely:

  • Gluten free
  • Earth friendly
  • Cruelty free
  • Paraben free
  • Acetone free
  • Soy free

And did I mention colorful?

Pictured above, from front to back:

  1. Nail Polish- Orange Sorbet
  2. Nail Polish- Raspberry Sorbet
  3. Top Coat
  4. Base Coat

Aren’t those colors fabulous? So bright! And they really do translate that same color to the nails! But I’m getting ahead of myself…

Gluten Free Nail Polishes

I’m so in love with Keeki Pure and Simple’s colors. They have everything from these neon shades to traditional nudes. From kid-friendly to true adult shades. And to make it even better, both of the colors above end up pretty much the same color on the nail that they are in the bottle. There is very little darkening, or taking an off color.

However, they are not entirely opaque. When I follow the instructions to the letter, with two thin coats of polish, you can clearly see where the white of the nail begins. But if you keep piling on the polish to cover that entirely, pretty soon you’ll have a far too heavy glob that will peel almost immediately. I’ve found that three coats is the best depth for still staying on and reducing the “white line” at the end of your nail (like on the right).

When applying this polish, it has very nearly no scent. There is nobody walking by and yelling “Someone’s putting on nail polish!” because the stench has drifted through the house. No chemical headache that drives you out to the fresh air to clear your head (just me? M’kay…). And that’s so nice. It takes half the pain out of applying nail polish.

Oh and speaking of the pains of nail polish… This stuff dries to the touch ridiculously fast. Such a big bonus. I hate sitting around without the use of my fingers for a full 15 mins before everything is dry enough not to rub right off. I know, I’m an impatient gal. But that is the #1 reason I don’t paint my nails more often. This nail polish dries to the touch after a minute, each coat. With 5 total coats (base + polish x 3 + top), that brings this up to a five minute manicure. Now of course you still need to be gentle with it and yes you have to wait an hour before getting it wet. But hey! I can read a library book and not stain it! It’s the little things, don’tcha know. 😉

Base Coat

The base coat is so thin on the brush that it is almost like water. When dry, it leaves a matte finish that has more visual presence than when it’s wet.

This base coat really seems to work well. It does not stop chipping around the edges entirely, but it does keep it from happening right away. Peeling, however, is pretty much out of the question when this base coat is on. To make it even better, there is no chemical stench that I typically associate with base coats!

Top Coat

I was vaguely worried when I saw how cloudy the top coat was. Would it hinder the color of the polish below it?

Nope. Not at all.

The top coat does a beautiful job of lending high shine and a rubbery feel to the finished polish. It really helps to keep the polish from chipping right away. And just like everything else of Keeki’s, there is no icky scent when applying! It does have the strongest scent of all three nail products, but it’s still nothing that is troublesome.

Overal Wear and Removal

When every layer is applied together, it lasts only a few days before chipping. For me, I get the first chips by day 3. But I’m also a notoriously bad nail polish applicator (don’t laugh OK, but whenever my sisters catch sight of my painted nails they shake their heads at me). So who knows, maybe someone else would have better luck.

Also, make sure you follow the removal directions to the letter. This polish can be a real pain to take off, so soaking it with the cotton pad is vital. And it’s not like you can just let it chip away into oblivion, because it will cling to the center of your nail with surprising tenacity. Perhaps with the Keeki Nail Polish remover it would come off easier than with a traditional remover. But since I didn’t try that, I’m not sure.

All in all, Keeki Pure and Simple Nail Polish is an exuberantly colored, stink free and gentle nail polish.

You just can’t beat this kind of safety in a nail set. The colors are fun, the fast drying time is total win and I will never not adore being able to breathe while applying nail polish. Whether for yourself or for your child, these are nail polishes you don’t have to worry about.

Gluten Free Hair Styling Products that Rock – Surface Hair Care

You’ve asked for this again and again! I’ve searched for it for over a year. And finally- finally! I have something definite for y’all: Surface Hair Care is indeed 100% gluten free. They have a full line of gluten free hair styling and hair care products, ranging from shampoo and conditioner, to hairspray, mousse, gel and even wax. They also have hair repair cremes and hydrating oils. If you can think of it, Surface probably has it.

For the gluten free hair world, this is nearly unheard of.

But Surface has done it.

This alone is enough to commend them. But add onto that the ability to get it in a salon…

Then add to that the products are actually amazing

And we have a total winner.

Surface puts a priority on working to heal hair. With options to help strengthen, moisturize or even thicken your hair, there’s pretty much something here for everyone.

However, my hair doesn’t fit into any of those categories. I have super fine, super oily hair. While I’d love to share the cleaning and healing products with you, I simply don’t have the hair to be able to accurately tell you how well those particular products work.

My hair is almost seaweed slippery and limp. It has no body. All hair styles fall within moments, unless there are a dozen pins + grippy hairbands.

Because of this, my hair is the absolute perfect candidate for the styling products.

The only reason I mention this: With as amazing as the styling products turned out to be, I highly recommend you go check out the other products as well! If you do, please let me know what you think! I’m jealous of you. Ha.

Here’s what I did get to try!

  • Theory Firm Styling Spray
  • Jump Styling Mousse
  • Push Styling Powder

Theory Firm Styling Spray

I’ve tried an awful lot of hairsprays through the years. Here in Texas it can be challenging to find ones that work, due to the humidity in both East and Central areas of the state I’ve lived in.

As such, I try out all hairsprays with a touch of misgiving.

But the Theory Firm Styling Spray has really impressed both me and everyone else whose tried it. The hold is amazing, it doesn’t weigh down my hair, it stays put despite icky humidity and is surprisingly flexible. Plus the scent is not overpowering, which I really appreciate.

Jump Styling Mousse

This product gives a good hold that never gets stiff. It helps me to get body in my limp hair and gives me added texture and volume until the next time I shower. In fact, I’m starting to get addicted to it… I’m not used to my hair cooperating with me!

Like the hair spray, the mousse also smells very nice. I like how clean it is, but not overpowering.

Push Styling Powder

The best has been saved for last. When I first typed out the title of this section, I accidentally wrote “Push Styling Power“. Which made me snicker and I almost didn’t change it to the proper name. Why?

No, seriously, this styling powder… It’s incredible. Like magic. Like mystical power gifted unto me for glorious hair.

But if you’re like me, you have no idea what a styling powder is. I had never heard of such a thing. My first thought was “Um, how does powder help style my hair?” Well here’s the low-down:

The styling powder is like a sticky dust that settles into you hair, gripping the hair shafts and adding texture and volume to degrees I never thought was possible. Hence the magical powers previously mentioned.

The amount of volume I can get using this powder (I typed power again!) is literally incredible. It lasts and lasts all day and you can sleep in it overnight, brush it out and tease it back up again to the same heights as the day before. I’m in awe. Nearly worshipful awe. My Styling Power. I love it.

All in all, I’m thoroughly impressed with Surface’s Gluten Free Hair Care!

Their products work amazingly well, are priced reasonably, smell pleasant and are overall much closer to perfect than should be legal. I was hoping for good things from them, but never expected to be so thoroughly blown away.

Velvety Liquid Foundation and Gluten Free Mascara that’ll Rock your Socks! – Emani

Some days, you just feel like you were “meant” to find something.  That cute dress.  That new restaurant behind the grocery store.  That makeup company that pops out of nowhere and is entirely gluten free…  You wanna guess which one just happened to me the other day?

Yep!  I stumbled across Emani out of the blue a while back, through another blogger who happened to mention that they are gluten free.  Having never heard of them, I was quite curious.  But a quick browse through their site had me completely interested.  A full makeup line, including gluten free mascara!! *said in sing song opera voice*

Now, currently Emani does not test for gluten, nor do they have any intention of doing so in the future that I know of.  They focus on using non wheat, rye or barley derived ingredients.  All of these ingredients are mineral pigments and organic plant/flower oils or waxes.  So although the ingredients do not naturally contain gluten, and although Emani takes care to keep their products gluten free, there is always a small amount of risk involved in using their products.  That being said, I myself am using the products they sent me to try out with no problemo, whatsoever.  In fact, I’m loving ’em.

So!  Here’s what I got to try!

Hydrating Liquid Mineral Foundation

I have a history of not overly caring for liquid foundations.  They can look stunning, but it’s so easy for them to go all cakey and plastered.  Plus they tend to feel funky on my skin.  Still, I haven’t given up on them yet, and I know a lot of people prefer liquid.  Emani’s liquid foundations looked lovely and for some reason, I had a good feeling about them…

And ‘ya know what?  My gut spoke truth.  Emani’s Hydrating Liquid Mineral Foundation is fabulous.

First off, the colors seem to have an excellent variety.  I received “Golden Amber”, though originally I was looking at “Oyster Beige”.  Oyster was out of stock at the time, so Golden Amber was sent instead.  But it still worked fabulously!  Golden Amber is just the right summer shade for me and I am not easy to match.

Secondly, it goes on like a dream.  Silky smooth, easy to spread and dries fast.  When it does dry, my face feels like velvet to the touch.

The coverage is quite good, yet as long as you don’t use a heavy hand does not look cakey.  It looks more like…  Well, velvet!  And it’s beautiful.  I love how it blends into my skin flawlessly, mutes out red spots in the blink of any eye, but does not make me look like a stiff and over made-up doll.

Also (and here’s one of my favorite parts), this foundation does not feel “stifling” to my skin.  It’s heavier than powder of course, but unlike many other liquid foundations I’ve tried this one does not feel like my face is in a mask.  And at night, it washes off perfectly without feeling like it’s still clinging to my pores.  This makes me very happy indeed.

The only thing I didn’t much care for was the scent.  There’s some sort of fragrance in the foundation that was so strong, it nearly gave me a headache.  It did not actually give me one, nor did it make me sneeze or my eyes water, it was just really really strong.  People who are more accustomed to liquid foundation may be totally used to it, but for me it was nearly overwhelming at first.  It’s of note though that Emani does not use artificial fragrances in their products.  I’m sure that’s why this one did not make me react in any way.  At any rate, the scent did not last very long and dissipated rapidly as it dried.

I really like this foundation!  In fact, it’s something I’d be quite happy to keep on hand at all times.  Me, who doesn’t really care for liquid foundations.   😉   Can’t say I’m a full convert yet, but Emani’s liquid foundation is pushing me in that direction.

Soy Mascara

I was SO excited to try out this mascara.  Having been on the hunt for an amazing gluten free mascara for ages, I really hadn’t found one that lived up to my standards.  Sure, some of them are OK, but either they’re sticky, or flaky, or clumpy or something.  But Emani’s Soy Mascara?

Folks, I screamin’ love this stuff.

NO clumps!  NO flaking!  And y’all the definition!  My breath hitched in my throat as I watched my lashes separate, lengthen and go all hi-def.  Oh.  My.  Word.  It’s glorious, y’all.

Now, it does not really do much thickening.  There’s a little bit, especially if you go for two or three coats, but not a whole lot.  Now, I always put brown or black eyeliner right at my lash line anyway to give the illusion of thickness, so combining that with the extreme definition of this mascara makes this mascara look gorgeous, without being overbearing.

Also, bear in mind it’s not waterproof.  If you get your eyes pretty wet, it will rub off a bit.  Not terribly, and in fact I’ve had gluten free mascara flake off with normal wear worse than Emani’s mascara rubs off when my eyes water ’cause the wind is blowing hard in my face.

I am, seriously and officially, in love with this gluten free mascara.  I have no complaints whatsoever with it and have everything to love about it.  Can you tell I’m still excited over it!?  😀  LOVE LOVE LOVE Emani’s Soy Mascara!!
I was hoping for good things from Emani, but they completely exceeded my expectations.  And I’m soooo happy they did!  Go check ’em out, folks!  You won’t be disappointed!
